Overview
It’s been over a decade since the last Grand Theft Auto game, and while players are still engrossed in GTA Online, anticipation has been building for Rockstar Games to announce a new entry in the franchise. Despite numerous leaks and rumors, Rockstar remained tight-lipped until late 2023. With the official confirmation of GTA 6, fans are eagerly awaiting what is set to be one of the most anticipated games of the generation. Here’s a comprehensive look at what we know about GTA 6, including its release date, trailers, setting, characters, gameplay, and more.
Release Date
Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA 6 is slated for release in Fall 2025. This was officially stated by Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, during a May 2024 earnings call. Zelnick emphasized that the game is expected to be a significant milestone for the company, reflecting a narrowing of the previous release window to the fall of 2025. This confirmation indicates that there are currently no anticipated delays.
Trailers

On December 5, 2023, the first video for GTA 6 was set to come out.. However, it was leaked online a day early, giving fans their initial glimpse into the game. The trailer introduces two primary characters: Lucia, who appears to have a criminal background, and an unnamed male who seems to be her partner in crime and possibly in romance. The setting returns to Vice City, but with a modern twist compared to its 1980s portrayal in previous games. The trailer showcases a variety of environments, from beaches and urban streets to swamps and suburbs.
Delay Since Last Update
As of now, it has been 273 days since the release of the GTA 6 trailer, making this the longest period without new information from Rockstar Games about the game. For comparison, previous Rockstar games had shorter gaps between significant updates: GTA 5 had a second news update after 253 days, and Red Dead Redemption 2 saw its second news update after 214 days. This extended silence has heightened anticipation and speculation among fans.
Setting

The story of GTA 6 takes place in the made-up state of Leonida, which has a new version of Vice City. This new setting is inspired by Florida and includes diverse environments such as bustling cityscapes, swamps, and suburban areas. Rockstar promises that the game world will be the most immersive ever created for the series, offering players a richly detailed and expansive experience.
Characters

The game will have two major characters: Lucia and a man protagonist yet unnamed. Both characters are depicted as criminals seeking wealth through various means. This focus on a duo, rather than the trio seen in GTA 5, suggests a more streamlined narrative. The character dynamics and interactions will likely play a significant role in the gameplay experience.
Map Size
GTA 6’s map is expected to be significantly larger than that of GTA 5. The in-game representation of Leonida is inspired by the real-life state of Florida, which covers about 140 square kilometers. If this scale is translated into the game, the map could be nearly double the size of GTA 5’s 75 square kilometers. Although there were initial plans for an even larger map spanning both North and South America, these were scaled back to focus on the Leonida region.
Price
A lot of people have talked about how much GTA 6 will cost. While some leaks suggest a price around $150, it is more likely that the game will be priced similarly to other new releases, around $70. Given the substantial development costs estimated between $1 and $2 billion, the game might also be priced at $80 to $90 for the base edition.
Platforms
Launch will see Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 access GTA 6. While there is currently no confirmation of a PC release, it is anticipated that the game will eventually come to PC, though it may follow a staggered release similar to previous Rockstar titles. The game will not be available on older consoles like Xbox One and PS4.
Gameplay
The trailer for GTA 6 was cinematic, so specific gameplay details are limited. However, it is expected that the game will include shooting, driving, and criminal activities. The trailer suggests a densely packed world with unique NPCs and a range of interactive elements. Players can expect numerous side activities, mini-games, and distractions, continuing the franchise’s tradition of offering extensive content.
GTA Online
Given the success of GTA Online with its predecessor, it is highly likely that GTA 6 will feature some form of multiplayer functionality. Whether this will be a standalone mode or integrated into the main game remains to be seen. Early reports suggest that dedicated servers may not be included, and GTA Online might not launch simultaneously with the main game. A staggered release could follow, similar to previous Rockstar titles.
Pre-Orders
Pre-orders for GTA 6 are not yet available. With the game’s release set for Fall 2025, pre-order details are expected to be announced closer to the release date. Fans should stay tuned for updates as they become available.
